CS373 Fall 2021: Debbie Wong

Where did you grow up?

I grew up in Portland, Oregon and moved to Texas for high school and college.

What high school did you attend?

Stephen F. Austin High School in Sugar Land, Texas.

Why are you in this class?

I heard great things about Professor Downing and wanted to learn more about web development.

What was your favorite extracurricular activity in high school?

Art club! We had a chapter of National Art Honor Society where I was co-president. I was also on the varsity swim team for three years which I quit senior year because we had to wake up at 4:30 every morning for practice and I like sleeping.

Why did you come to UT?

It's a great school for computer science.

Why are you majoring in CS?

I've always had an interest for computers and wanted to pursue it further.

What are your expectations?

I expect to learn about web development and to work with a group I'm not familiar with. I hope to learn more about SQL and Javascript specifically.

How much Javascript/Python/SQL/Web programming do you already know?

I know Python from my Networks class last semester, but that's all.

How did you like the first lectures?

They were fine, much smaller class size than last semester in OOP so I can be expected to be called on sooner.

How did you feel about the cold calling?

I think it's fine, and it works well with keeping people focused.

What made you happy this week?

A trailer for a video game update that I play dropped and it made me excited for when it releases!

What's your pick-of-the-week or tip-of-the-week?

Google anything you don't know how to use, which I assume is what we will be doing a lot this semester with our projects.

 1. What did you do this past week? This past week I held discussion section for my 312 students for the first time. I also graded their second assignment last night, which grades were not so great. I had a meeting with my manager from my summer internship yesterday and found out that I did not receive a return offer for a full time position unfortunately, so I've also been practicing Leetcode to prepare for future interviews. 2. What's in your way? I need to finish a Game Technology homework that has been rather puzzling so far. I also need to finish my iOS mobile development homework as well. For Monday, I need to prepare for discussion section and I'll need to finish touching up my resume to send out to recruiters for full time interviews. 3. What will you do next week? CS 373 Fall 2021 Week 8/30

What did you do this past week? This week I had my first office hours for the class I TA for, CS 312. I also started the Collatz assignment and managed to pass the HackerRank test cases. I got assigned my first homework assignment for iOS mobile programming and started thinking about how to work that out. What's in your way? I need to finish this blog, then I need to create my acceptance and unit tests for Collatz. I also need to start on my iOS mobile programming assignment which is in Swift, and I need to read up on the syntax for that language. What will you do next week? My goal for this next week is to finish the Collatz assignment, finish my iOS mobile computing homework, and start grading the first homework assignment for CS 312. I'll also need to host my office hours and prepare for the first discussion section for that class. If you read it, what did you think of the Paper #2: Makefile? CS 373 Fall 2021 Week of 8 Nov - 14 Nov

What did you do this past week? This past week my group and I worked on implementing sorting, filtering, and searching through the backend for phase 3, half of which was done for us since we're using Flask Restless. We did have to manually implement the search feature though, but luckily it wasn't too bad as we referenced our TA's code and it was easy to understand. I also worked on coming up with a final project for my Game Tech class, where we decided that we will be creating a PvP turn based combat game, similar to Pokemon in nature. I also started working on the final release of our app project with my iOS group, where our next step will be implementing map functionalities. What's in your way? The only big thing in my way right now is the sheer workload I have for all my classes. All of my classes are project based classes and while that isn't a bad thing, trying to juggle so many large projects at the same time is a bit overwhelming. I also find the project for...
